| Dear .......... MP My company’s livelihood is about to be threatened, along with many others in the conference, theatre and live events industries in the UK, by an initiative by OFCOM that could send us all back to the 'dark ages'. OFCOM, in its infinite wisdom, is planning to sell off the radio frequencies which are currently used by the entertainment industry for wireless microphones, communications and personal monitoring systems. Without strong opposition, it is likely that parties such as cash-rich mobile phone service providers will outbid the live industry to obtain this frequency spectrum. The consequence of this will be that the £millions of wireless equipment currently in use across the UK will no longer be able to be operated legally. Can you imagine the chaos this will cause to an industry that currently turns over almost £15 billion annually in the UK? Popular trends in modern performance have led many audio companies to invest a considerable amount in wireless technology for rental and sales stock. Indeed, wireless microphones and in-ear-monitors (IEM) have become a ubiquitous part of almost every theatre, musical, conference, TV, film and concert performance. In addition to the businesses which will be affected, there are all the schools, churches and local authority venues which regularly use wireless microphones. It will be an outrage if this equipment is suddenly made illegal. Quite apart from the inconvenience to clients and the practical difficulties it will create for live events, there is a strong view that wireless systems contribute significantly to improving Health & Safety in our workplace by removing hazardous trip conditions posed by floor monitor speakers and microphone leads trailing across a stage (or conference room or studio or road or footpath, etc, etc). The specialist wireless audio equipment in question has absolutely no other possible function and will present an additional disposal problem for owners. Even if OFCOM were to compensate wireless users (which they are not) by offering to buy all existing wireless kits currently in use, we would still experience an on-going reduction in sales and rental income. I urge you to sign Andrew Mackinlay's Early Day Motion 531 calling for the government to intervene in Ofcom's plans and save our industry. I would also welcome your comments on this matter and any help or support you may be able to offer. Yours truly,
