Part of the "smaller" Philips/Marantz
CD players of the good years, still
made in Belgium... and assembled in
Japan by Marantz Japan.
The product code is typically Philips :
74CD80/04B or 04G for the rare champagne version. (This particular
unit type is
74CD80/05B).
Despite the "small" list price, half that of a
CD-95, inside is full of treasures :
CDM1MkII Philips
CDM drive, two TDA1541A S1 converters
and a one-piece diecast chassis à la
CD104 (with more holes in it, though), 3mm
aluminium top and bottom plates, heavyweight diecast sideburns and
solid aluminium feet.
The CD-80 sold extremely well and
remained on sale much longer in Europe than elsewhere.
